Which shirt fabrics cause nipple chafing?

By Michael LangfordUpdated 2 min read

Short answer

Cotton causes the most nipple chafing because it soaks up sweat, gets heavy and drags across your skin. Snug shirts in moisture-wicking synthetics such as polyester or nylon blends, with flat seams and no large chest prints, cause the least.

Key takeaways

  • Avoid cotton for long runs. It holds water and drags.
  • Choose moisture-wicking polyester or nylon blends.
  • A snug fit moves less than a loose one.
  • Watch out for chest prints, stiff seams and pinned race bibs.

Cotton causes the most nipple chafing. It soaks up sweat, gets heavy and stays wet, so it clings to your chest and drags across the nipple with every stride. Snug shirts made from moisture-wicking synthetics, such as polyester or nylon blends, cause the least.

Fabric: what to wear and what to avoid

FabricChafing riskWhy
CottonHighAbsorbs sweat and stays wet, heavy and clingy
Cotton blendsMedium to highBetter than pure cotton, still holds water
PolyesterLowWicks sweat and dries fast
Nylon and elastane blendsLowSmooth, stretchy and fitted
Merino woolLow to mediumSoft and handles moisture well, but some knits feel rough when wet

The free cotton tee from a race expo is a common cause of bleeding nipples on race day. Save it for after the finish.

Fit: snug beats loose

A loose shirt swings and flaps, so the fabric keeps sliding across your nipples. A snug shirt moves with you. Aim for a fit that sits close without digging in at the armholes or neckline.

Details that add friction

  • Large chest prints. Rubberized logos and graphics are stiffer and rougher than the fabric around them.
  • Seams. Look for flat or bonded seams, especially across the chest.
  • Race bibs. A bib pinned high on your chest can rub. Pin it lower or use a race belt.
  • Hydration vests and heart rate straps. Check where straps sit and whether they press the shirt against your nipples.

Is a good shirt enough?

On short runs, often yes. On long, hot or wet runs, most runners also need a barrier over the nipple. Compare your options in Vaseline vs tape vs nipple covers.

Questions runners ask

Do cotton shirts cause chafing?

Yes. Cotton absorbs sweat and stays wet, so it gets heavy and clings, which increases friction. Moisture-wicking synthetic fabrics are a better choice for long runs.

Is a tight or loose shirt better for chafing?

A snug shirt is usually better. It moves less against your skin with each stride. It should not be so tight that it digs in.

Will a good shirt stop nipple chafing on its own?

It reduces the risk but may not stop it on long, hot or wet runs. Most distance runners also use a barrier such as nipple covers, tape or lubricant.
